Friday 11 August 2006

On Friday night, at the 2006 Royal Melbourne Wine Show, Shingleback Wine was awarded the Australian Wine Industry's most prestigious and sought after prize, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. Awarded annually to the producer of the best one-year-old red wine, the 2005 Shingleback D Block Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over 850 entries encompassing all red wine varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

A loved wine merchant, Jimmy Watson is memorialized with this award for the integral role he played in the modern Australian wine revolution. After his death in 1962, friends of the late Jimmy Watson encouraged his family to acknowledge Jimmy’s extraordinary contribution to the wine and food industry with an award that Australian winemakers strive for year after year.

Since Shingleback debuted with the 1998 vintage, the wines have earned significant acclaim world wide, including  Gold Medals and top awards from Australia’s most renowned wine shows as well as consistent 90+ ratings from such influential U.S. publications as The Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. Winning the Jimmy Watson caps off a remarkable month which saw Shingleback Wine nominated as “The Australian Producer of the Year” in the United Kingdom and earning Gold Medals in the New World Wine Awards in New Zealand.

Shingleback is family owned, hand-crafting rich fruit forward Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from their Davey Family Estate Vineyard utilising innovative canopy management and progressive viticultural techniques to produce wines of exceptional quality and character.
