Ormonde - Alexanderfontein
| ![]() | Situated in the cooler and wonderfully named 'Darling' area, the heartstopping scale of this beautifully laid out property is the first thing that stikes visitors when they enter through the farm gate. The 300 ha vineyard rolls out as far as the eye can see, up into the hills where the gentle sea breezes from the west coast fan the vines, producing softer, more intensely fruity flavours Siting of the vines has been a prioity so that the varietal matches the microclimate. Sauvignon Blanc, for example faces the cooler Atlantic so the flavours can ripen and develop. Where ground is unsuitable for vines, olives grow. Young viticulturist and winemaker Theo Basson has his roots firmly in the traditions of winemaking, but using the latest technology. The results are tremendously exciting, particularly the Sauvignon Blanc which has gorgeous lifted aromas, and the juicy Merlot with its ripe and smooth finish New on the block, this estate is one to watch! |
